Calving Clinic Set in Union County

AFTON, Iowa — Cattle producers are invited to attend a calving clinic early next month at the Afton Community Center. Iowa State University Extension beef specialist Chris Clark said the Feb. 3 educational program will offer valuable information about analyzing body condition score, stages of labor, assisting with the birthing process and newborn calf care.
"Spring calving season is either underway or right around the corner for most producers, and this program should provide some timely information that producers can start using right away," he said. "We will spend some time talking about the calving process and successfully managing that process, and also talk about some basic nutrition and health management as they relate to health and vigor of the newborn calf."
In addition to classroom style learning, attendees also will get to experience some simulated real life situations.
"We will offer some hands-on practice with the dystocia model from the college of veterinary medicine," Clark said. "This popular activity allows participants to actually practice applying OB chains, correcting the position problems, and delivering the calf."
The clinic will be held Feb. 3, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Afton Community Center, 240 N. Douglas, Afton. An evening meal will be provided and the registration fee is $10 per person.
