Driftless Region Beef Conference 2024 will feature Kim Stackhouse-Lawson
Beef industry progress in sustainability and environmental impact will be shared

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The upcoming Driftless Region Beef Conference will showcase Dr. Kim Stackhouse-Lawson from Colorado State University, known for her work in sustainability of beef with NCBA and JBS USA, She's now the director of AgNext, a center for research in animal and ecosystem health, and profitability throughout the supply chain, according to Denise Schwab, beef specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. The conference will be held Jan. 25-26, 2024, at the Grand River Conference Center in Dubuque.
“The beef industry has numerous challenges related to sustainability, methane production, and environmental impact,” Schwab said. “We are excited to have Dr. Stackhouse-Lawson share her research on cattle’s environmental impact and consideration for beef producers in the future based on true scientific research.”
Another featured speaker for this year’s conference is Pamela Stahlke, USDA RMA Regional Office Director. She will provide an overview of LRP and LGM Livestock Insurance to help producers protect their financial risk. Also, Trent Ford, Illinois state climatologist, will discuss how the changing Midwest climate impacts beef production, and Jerry Huth from Huth Polled Herefords will share his experience receiving the 2022 NCBA regional Environmental Stewardship Award.
Other speakers include Beth Reynolds, Lee Schulz, Grant Dewell, Randie Culbertson, and Steph Hansen, all from Iowa State University; Dan Shike, University of Illinois; Dennis Hancock, U.S. Dairy Forage Research Center; and Melanie Pimentel Concepcion, Michigan State University. The evening bull pen session will feature custom forage harvesters and their ‘Wish List’ for their clients.
A BQA certification training will also be offered for producers who need to renew their certification following the conference on Friday at 1 p.m. Call the Benton County Extension at 319-472-4739 to register to attend, and to request a box lunch if needed.
The early registration fee is $100 per person and must be received prior to midnight, Jan 13. The price increases to $130 after that date. More information on topics, speakers, lodging, and registration options is available on the conference website.
