Time to register for 2024 Veterinarian Update at ISU McNay Farm

CHARITON, Iowa – The 2024 Update for Veterinarians program offers current information and education for large-animal and mixed-animal veterinarians with a focus on beef production. Organizer Chris Clark said practitioners who work with cattle will hear from Iowa State University experts on water and its impacts on diet formulation and health, Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in dairy cattle, and biosecurity strategy updates at the June 25 event. It will be held at the ISU McNay Memorial Research and Demonstration Farm near Chariton.
“This year's water topic will build on the protein and fiber nutrition sessions from previous years," Clark said. "The HPAI update and biosecurity recommendations also will provide useful information that veterinarians can take home and use right away in their practices.”
Clark, an ISU extension beef specialist, said the morning session begins with a presentation on water from Garland Dahlke, nutritionist and research scientist with the Iowa Beef Center/ISU animal science department. His talk will include nutrients that may be found in water supplies and how to incorporate these in diet formulation, contaminants that are commonly dealt with in water and testing for them, health implications of water or lack of water, and what this means for livestock.
“The discovery of HPAI in dairy cattle is a hot topic as an emerging disease and as we think about the epidemiology and transmission of this disease, it seems only natural to follow with a discussion of biosecurity," Clark said. "ISU extension dairy veterinarian Dr. Phillip Jardon, and Molly Lee and Delaine Quaresma from the Center for Food Security & Public Health at ISU will speak to those topics."
Participants will have the opportunity for interactive, hands-on learning with the new ISU biosecurity trailer, and they can talk with McNay farm staff about projects.

Those who preregister by June 21 will pay $50 per person, which includes lunch catered by Cater 2U2, and a morning break. Those who register onsite will pay $70. Registration is handled by the Lucas County Extension Office in Chariton. Five hours of continuing education credits have been approved.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at the farm headquarters with the first speaker starting at 9 a.m. A catered meal will be served at 12:15 p.m. and the program is expected to end around 3:30 p.m.
